Which parts of the breast pump should be sterilized and replaced?

Spis treści

Is that the doorbell? You’ve just received a package. You open the box to find your new Neno breast pump waiting for you. It’s simply beautiful – shiny, elegant, and in your favorite color! Okay, but actually… where do you start? Can you just assemble it, put it to your breast, and use it endlessly? Absolutely not!

You’re probably wondering why this is strictly forbidden. The answer is very simple: microorganisms are lurking everywhere, ready to get into the precious milk flowing from your breast. When you start using a breast pump, you should get into the habit of regularly washing and thoroughly sterilizing its parts.

What parts does a breast pump consist of?

The heart of the device is always the pump. In addition to this, the set includes: a 150 ml bottle, a silicone funnel with a cap, a teat, a bottle cap, a connector, a membrane cover, a membrane, a valve, and a bottle stand.

Depending on whether you have a single Neno Uno or a double Neno Bianco breast pump, the sets may differ in terms of the number of certain components. The double device always comes with two bottles, funnels, and tubes connecting the bottles to the pump.

Which breast pump components should be sterilized?

You should sterilize the parts that may come into direct contact with food. These are: the bottle (or bottles), funnel (or funnels), connector, membrane, valve, and nipple.

When should the sterilization process be carried out?

As mentioned earlier, sterilization is the first rule for every breast pump user. To maintain proper hygiene, it is necessary to sterilize the pump before the first use and after each subsequent pumping session.

Important! Remember to wash your hands before reassembling the breast pump. Only then will the entire procedure be carried out correctly.

How to sterilize a breast pump?

We recommend two sterilization methods: traditional and modern.

You are probably familiar with the traditional method from stories told by your grandmother or mother. First, wash the disassembled breast pump with lukewarm water and dishwashing liquid, then immerse it in boiling water for about 10 minutes.

You will discover a more convenient way to sterilize by using one of the multifunctional devices: Neno Luna, Neno Vita or Neno Lindo. Each of them has been designed to quickly and easily sterilize breast pump parts and more. Their other functions, such as heating, defrosting, and maintaining temperature, will help you with other daily tasks.

Which breast pump parts need to be replaced after a while?

In addition to sterilization, an important part of maintaining hygiene and proper functioning of the device is the periodic replacement of its individual components. These include, above all, those that come into contact with milk and are in constant use, i.e., the silicone membrane and the plastic valve.

The membrane, which prevents milk and moisture from entering the tubes and motor, should be replaced every 8 weeks (if you use the breast pump 1-3 times a day) or every 3-4 weeks (if you use the breast pump more than 3 times a day).

The valve, which ensures, among other things, that milk flows in the right direction, should be replaced with a new one every 2-3 months (if you use the breast pump 1-3 times a day) or every 4 weeks (if you use the breast pump more than 3 times a day).

You can recognize wear and tear by cracks, deformations, or discoloration. Each of these can be purchased separately or in the extended Neno Spare package.
