How to Choose the Right BreastShield for a Breast Pump? A Short Guide for Moms
Spis treści
Breastfeeding is a beautiful but sometimes challenging process. To make using a breast pump comfortable and effective, it is essential to choose the right breast shield size for your nipple. Read our guide and find out how to do it!
Why is choosing the right breast shield so important?
Every mom is unique – just like the shape and size of her nipples. That’s why a one-size-fits-all breast shield doesn’t always work. What’s more, your body may change during lactation. It’s worth checking regularly whether the breast shield you use still fits properly. Remember, the right fit has a direct impact on the efficiency of milk expression!
When and how should you measure your nipple?

It’s best to take the measurement after the 32nd week of pregnancy or before using a breast pump for the first time. All you need is a flexible measuring tape and a few minutes. Here are the steps to follow:
- Measure the width of your nipple at the base (without the areola).
- Check the result against the breast shield size chart.
- Choose the appropriate shield size or a reducer if your nipple is smaller.
Important! Do not measure your nipples when they are swollen or irritated.
How to choose the right breast shield?

Based on the measurement result, choose a breast shield according to the table below. We offer a wide selection of shields and reducers, so you can be sure to find the perfect fit:
Nipple Diameter (mm) | Bottle Pumps | Hands-Free Breast Shields | Neno Perla/Twin | Neno Velo/Sole |
11–16 | 15–19 mm | 19 mm | 19 mm | 19 mm |
17–20 | 21–24 mm | 21–24 mm | 22–24 mm | 20–24 mm |
21–26 | 24–27 mm | 24–28 mm | 26 mm | 24 mm |
Legend:
“r” denotes a reducer that allows you to fit a smaller breast shield for smaller nipples.
Sample fits:
- For a nipple diameter of 13 mm, the best option is the 15 r reducer.
- If your nipple measures 20 mm, choose a 24 mm breast shield or a 20 r reducer, depending on the breast pump model.
- For nipples with a diameter of 26 mm, the appropriate size is a 27 mm breast shield.
How to recognize that the breast shield fits properly?
During milk expression, the nipple should move freely inside the shield’s tunnel without rubbing against its walls. If you experience discomfort, pain, or notice redness, it’s a sign that you need a different breast shield size. For smaller nipples, reducers are often recommended, which help adjust standard shields to individual needs.
Tip!
What should you pay the most attention to when using a breast pump?
– If you experience pain or discomfort, check if the breast shield is properly fitted.
– Make sure the nipple is not rubbing against the walls of the shield during milk expression.
– If in doubt, consult a lactation consultant.
